I took the product description straight from the Roxy & Rich website:
Colour is achieved by adding a thin layer of food colouring to mica particles. This allows for an exceptional brilliance that outshines all other such products on the market. Hybrid Lustre Dust can be used dry or with water, alcohol or lemon extract. The same colours are also available in the Hybrid Sparkle Dust Collection for a greater level of shine.
Advantages
* As food safety standards vary from one country to the next, * Blue-Violet, Princess Pink, and Amethyst Pink, contain R3 (E127). They do not meet European food safety standards and must be used for decorative purposes only) . Some more great features of the lustre dust are:
Although the entire Lustre dust collections comes in 64 colours, we do not carry the full line. With the colours we do carry, I took on the task of creating colour swatches of all of them! I also categorized them in shades to help make choosing the right colours for your projects easier!
I used Everclear alcohol, mixed with dust and painted straight on white royal icing. The results are vibrant and shiny! And the coverage is amazing! You can find a video on my YouTube channel where I demonstrate painting on royal icing using; Everclear, Vodka and Lemon Extract here.
this description is also taken from the Roxy & Rich website:
It consists of a mica base coated with iron oxide. The coating is insoluble, thus setting it apart from the water-soluble Hybrid Lustre Dust and Hybrid Sparkle Dust collections. The collection is made up of only a few colours.
Advantages
** Edible in Canada and Europe only; in the United States, this product must be used for decorative purposes only. Meet Health Canada and European Commission food safety standards. Do not meet FDA food safety standards**
Some more great features of the lustre dust are:
Below you will find all of the Highlighter Dusts available here on the website. I have painted them onto white royal icing, using Everclear to mix it.

Before I go on to explain why I love this product, let me tell you what it is.
FONDUST® is an easy to use, microencapsulated, and 100% edible food colouring. It is a highly pigmented dust that is used to colour fondant, royal icing, buttercream, candy, etc. Practically everything except pure chocolate. With this product, you can achieve dark colours, such as black and red, as well as bright colours such as orange and pink.
Some advantages of FONDUST ® are:
Richard, one of the founders of Roxy & Rich, created FONDUST ® in 2016. This unique and one of a kind product was nominated in 2017 at the Cake Masters Award for the BEST PRODUCT!
I was introduced to FONDUST ® in November of 2019. It took using it a couple of times to get used to the high potency of the product! Because they are highly concentrated, you only need minimal amounts to achieve gorgeous shades. Let me touch on some important points you may want to take note of.
Using Fondust® with Royal Icing:
I know a lot of people add white pigment to their royal icing to avoid colour bleed. While it is great to add white pigment to your white icing to brighten it up. It is not recommended to add the white pigment to your icing while trying to achieve deep colours such as red or black. The reason is that the white food colour contains titanium dioxide which is a colour inhibitor. It keeps the pigments from fully developing. This would be why your red is turning pink and your black is turning grey!
While FONDUST is considered an instant colourant, I prefer to use less pigment and mix it a few shades lighter than the desired shade. Once I let it develop for a few hours, it becomes darker/brighter. ALSO, it dries darker, similar to paint on a wall. So be sure to take this into account while mixing it up!
Using Fondust® with Buttercream:
Using FONDUST® with Fondant:
Simply knead approximately 3g of dust into 1kg of fondant to achieve maximum colour intensity. If the fondant contains white pigment (titanium dioxide- as discussed earlier), you will require more FONDUST to reach maximum colour intensity.
Wearing food-safe gloves will help prevent staining on your hands.
*Use a paper towel, or a mat on your work surface to prevent staining
So, why do I love FONDUST®? Simply put- FONDUST® is THE BEST dust colourant in the industry. I have used just about everything on the market, and this product is incomparable. There is no bitter aftertaste and no odor. You can achieve multiple shades from a single jar. (For example, Super Red. You can achieve a pretty pink or coral colour by using minimal dust – all the way up to a vibrant and deep red using its full strength!)
There are 52 shades in the FONDUST collection – which equates to hundreds of different shades!
Easy to use and superior quality!
Using this dust has simplified colour mixing for me- specifically for the dark colours such as red and black. Not worrying about a bitter aftertaste is a bonus!
]]>Easy to use, FONDUST® is a microencapsulated food colouring especially designed for colouring food with very low water content. It can be used to colour fondant, sugar work (before or after baking), almond paste, royal icing, buttercream, cake mix, macaroons, decorating gel, candy, etc. Practically everything . . . except pure chocolate. The collection is made up of 36 colours. With FONDUST®, you can achieve very dark colours, like black, red, blue and brown, as well as very bright colours, such as orange, green, pink and violet.
Advantages
We currently carry 30 of the 36 GORGEOUS and VIBRANT colours!
How to use Fondust: It is suggested to start with a very small amount of FONDUST with your mixture. When mixing 2 cups of royal icing, start with 1/4 tsp of the FONDUST or less! Although it is considered an immediate , the colour continues to develop over a short period of time! When using black, I would suggest to get it to a dark grey only .. Within a few hours, it should be the black you envision. And remember that it will always dry darker as well. So take all of this into consideration when preparing your icing . It may be some trial and error in the beginning, but you will LOVE this product!
Another tip, do not add the Super White Fondust to your white icing PRIOR to adding the other pigments. For example, do not add the Super White Pigment and Super Red Pigment to your royal icing, or you will end up with a coral or pink and waste an entire bottle!!
Add the White pigment white icing only. This will brighten your white icing AND help prevent bleed.
As a customer, I know it can be difficult to purchase items just base on a photo. So I have taken the time (alot of time! LOL), to show you exactly how versatile these colours are!
Below, I have used every single colour that we carry in our shop, and given you a beautiful visual to help make your decision to purchase easier.
What you see on these (edible cookie) palettes, are the results of using just a small amount of powder, all the way up to full intensity. The more powder you add, the deeper the colour.
I always suggest to mix it a couple of shades lighter than the actual colour you want to achieve. Although it is considered instant colour, it does deepen and develop over a few hours. If you oversaturate the colour, you may be at risk for an aftertaste, and nobody wants that!
I've grouped them within similar colour famililes to give you a more precise visual for comparison.
Hope these photos help! Leave comments below :)

Check out this photo... I used the 3 that are totally prone to bleed together and they didn't
The advantages of FONDUST® are:
I have personally used them all and LOVE them! The are deep and vibrant. Here are some samples mixed :
The Hybrid Dust collection offers 64 , 8 of which feature a pearl finish. is achieved by adding a thin layer of food to mica particles. This allows for an exceptional brilliance that outshines all other such products on the market. Hybrid Dust can be used dry or with water, alcohol or lemon extract. The same are also available in the Hybrid Sparkle Dust Collection for a greater level of shine.
Advantages
At Emma's Sweets, we currently carry 8 of the most popular . I have used numerous dusts over the past 8 years of cookie decorating, and I can honestly say these are incomparable to most. They apply smooth and shiny. They can easily be dry dusted on your royal icing surface.
See the next photo of Santa where I used a paint brush to dry nose and cheeks using Princess Pink Hybrid Dust. And the palette below shows them all painted royal icing using an alcohol medium. I used Everclear alcohol.
The Hybrid Sparkle Dust collection offers a selection of 65 , 9 of which feature a pearl finish, all free of iron oxide (E172). is achieved by adding a thin layer of food to mica particles. This allows for exceptional brilliance that outshines all other such products on the market. Hybrid Sparkle Dust can be used dry or with water, alcohol or lemon extract. The same are also available in the Hybrid Dust collection.
Advantages
We currently carry 8 , and will continue to add more with . I personally prefer to empty the sparkle dust from the jar into an empty pump bottle, then apply it that way. I find that this dust sprays out like a fine mist and does not clump in sections.
I have only ever used it dry, but will experiment with different applications and then update this blog.
Tip: do not apply the sparkle dust directly your freshly iced royal icing. it to set for about 10 minutes and then spray it on. There will be just enough moisture and tackiness for the sparkle dust to adhere. It is to capture its beauty and sparkle in .. here are a couple.
It consists of a mica base coated with iron oxide. The coating is insoluble, thus setting it apart from the water-soluble Hybrid Dust and Hybrid Sparkle Dust collections. The collection is made up of only a few .

SO highlighters are a touchy subject! I used to carry the really shiny metallic gold looking highlighters and I used them on all of my cookies. The company I used years ago they were I trusted that. But as knowledge surfaced in the , it was found that those highlighters are for decorative use only. The ones from Roxy and Rich are edible in Canada and Europe, so I am comfortable carrying them in my shop. they have a nice sheen, they do not look like that shiny metal you see with other highlighters (the ones for decorative use only).
In the end, use what you are with. Do not use a product on food if you would not ingest it yourself.
Here are the 4 highlighters that we carry in the shop:
I hope this blog clarifies most questions.. there can be so much confusion with all of the dusts that are on the market. I can only speak of the ones carried in my shop. Most info in this post has come straight from the manufacturer.
Thanks for taking the time to read and I know that you will love these products as much as we do!
GIVEAWAY CLOSED- the winner is Selena (sweet.cookies12@yahoo.com
I get tonnes of messages daily through social media..
"Mary, how do you manage everything?"... "How do you run a business and take care of your family?" They want to hear my story about how Emma's Sweets got started......
Let me tell you first hand -- it's been really hard- and is still hard!
I have two small children who constantly demand my attention (9 year old twins). A pile of laundry that never goes away! Housework that is neglected for weeks on end!! And the list goes on...
What started off as a hobby turned into something larger than I could have ever dreamed
With all of that being said, everything that I now have has come at a hefty cost. My physical and mental health has deteriorated, and that is a heavy price to pay.
I have suffered from debilitating anxiety all of my life. It only got worse as I got older. Nobody warned me that being in my mid 40's would be so challenging. Some days I struggle to take a deep breath. Catastrophic thoughts ruminate in my head on the best of days. It is a vicious cycle - and just when I think I have overcome it -- the little voice of anxiety taps on my shoulder and says "Uh no - I am not going anywhere!"
I worked in the financial industry for 15 years and that just added to my stress. That's when I began to bake on a more regular basis.
Eventually I discovered the world of "cookie decorating". And this is where my life began to change. Did it cure my anxiety disorder? Of course not. But did it provide me with relief? ABSOLUTELY!!
After leaving my banking job in 2017, I began to pursue baking and decorating on a full time basis. Decorating cookies
It is so important to take time for yourself on a daily basis, as in not doing so can prove to be damaging to your overall health. I am the worst at this and need to remind myself of how important this is. I encourage everyone to find a passion and pursue it! For me, baking and decorating cookies has proven to be an effective activity in a meditative sense. And if I can make others happy in the process, it makes it all more worthwhile!
I want to create a community, both here and on my social media..
Leave your comments below if you can relate.. I am going to send a small gift to 1 random individual who comments - giveaway will close on August 9th :) thanks for reading!
